How Prenatal Yoga Can Help You Have An Easier Birth
Have You Ever Thought About Why Some Births Are Quick And Uncomplicated While Others Are Protracted And Difficult?
Depending on the baby's position and the equilibrium of the expectant mother's bones, muscles, soft tissue, and ligaments, the ease or difficulty of childbirth varies. When the parent's body is more balanced, the baby's exit route is less likely to be obstructed, and the infant is more likely to assume an easier birthing position.
How then can the body be balanced so that it is prepared to facilitate a simpler birth?
Prenatal yoga is a good beginning!
How does prenatal yoga facilitate childbirth?
When using prenatal yoga to prepare the body for childbirth, alignment, and balance are always the primary focus.
If the body is aligned and balanced, birth may be faster and there may be less likelihood of unneeded interventions, as well as less stress and strain on the mother and child. With fewer obstructions, the baby's path to birth will also function more efficiently.
As a certified prenatal yoga practitioner with years of experience assisting expectant parents, Livfitt is intimately familiar with the complexities of the pregnancy body and employs poses that help rebalance and align.
The objective is to correct imbalances in the body that are a natural consequence of living. It can be caused by previous injuries, sports-related repetition, and even everyday activities and behaviors like crossing your legs or carrying your bag on one shoulder! I've carried my purse on the same shoulder for more than three decades. Consequently, my right shoulder is now lower, and my right side is now stronger and more toned.
Additionally, I labor to correct imbalances caused by pregnancy itself. For instance, as the abdomen expands, the spinal curves become more exaggerated, causing the pelvic to tilt forward. This then causes the legs to spin outwards more (the renowned pregnancy waddle!). As a result of the legs being rotated outwards, the deep hip rotators and butt muscles tend to tighten as a result of overuse.
When these muscles contract, the pelvic floor may also contract, which can impede the descent and rotation of the infant through the pelvis.
To correct all of these imbalances, I integrate a variety of asanas and yoga poses that target these problems. At the Prenatal Yoga Classes, we have been known to invent yoga poses to meet the body's requirements!
How Does Prenatal Yoga Fix Imbalances In The Body, And How Does This Facilitate An Easier Birth?
My method for correcting musculoskeletal imbalances involves incorporating yoga poses that can help to release tight muscles and strengthen weakened ones, thereby improving overall musculoskeletal function!
I always begin with breathe and posture.
360 Inhalation
Every class begins with 360 breaths. This focuses on all 360 degrees of the ribcage and diaphragm, particularly breathing into the side and back of the ribs, which is difficult for many, especially as the baby develops and pushes upward, placing pressure on the diaphragm and lungs.
The psoas muscle plays a significant role in how the infant descends and rotates into the pelvis and birthing position, and 360 breathing helps to release it.
Alignment
Then, for alignment, I implement a variety of yoga poses. There is no optimal posture, but we can bring awareness to habits and patterns such as knee hyperextension, pelvic protrusion, and rib flaring. In tadasana (mountain pose), we investigate where the weight rests in the foot and then build from there. In addition to adjusting the cranium, the thigh bones, back, pelvis, and rib cage are also adjusted.
I also strengthen the muscles of the pelvic girdle so that the pelvic floor does not have to tighten and take up the slack left by these sleep-related muscles. In class, we incorporate dynamic squats, bridge pose, and the use of a block-in-half plank, utkatasana, and downward dog.
With figure four and ankle-to-knee pose, our classes also include poses that alleviate tension in the deep rotators (piriformis). We release tension in the mid and upper back with poses such as catch, down dog and thread the needle.
In addition, we utilize anjaneyasana, extended bridge pose, and a pose I dub "the dangle" to release the psoas muscle.
How Effective Is Prenatal Yoga Facilitating An Easier Delivery?
In my experience, prenatal yoga is very effective at facilitating an easy birth with fewer complications and interventions. Additionally, research indicates that prenatal yoga significantly reduces labor discomfort.
In one study, prenatal yoga was found to substantially reduce pain intensity, shorten the duration of labor, and reduce the likelihood of labor induction and emergency cesarean sections.
As the body can be unpredictable, there are no guarantees, but our expectation is that if the body is better aligned and balanced, birth will be quicker and there will be less likelihood of unnecessary interventions. This will result in less stress for both mother and child, and the birthing procedure will be much more pleasant and memorable.
